Why Athletes With a Fitness Tracker Need a Different Macro Calculator
Every mainstream macro calculator makes the same move: it estimates your resting metabolism from height, weight, age and sex, then multiplies by an activity factor you choose from a drop-down — 1.2 for sedentary up to 1.9 for "extremely active". That one choice is the largest source of error in the whole calculation. Two people who both pick "moderately active" can differ by 600 calories a day, and the number never changes when your training does.
If you wear a WHOOP, Garmin, Apple Watch or similar device, you already have a better input. The watch estimates your energy expenditure from heart rate every day, personalised to you. A macro calculator for wearable users starts from that measurement instead of the drop-down, which does three things a generic tool cannot: it removes the activity-factor guess, it lets your targets move when your training block moves, and it gives you a readiness signal — WHOOP recovery or Garmin Body Battery — that can tilt carbohydrate up on days you can use it and down on days you cannot.

How the Two Calculators Differ
WHOOP: strain as a proxy for training energy
WHOOP does not expose its internal calorie model outside the app, but day strain is built from the same heart-rate stream as WHOOP calories, so the WHOOP calculator converts your average strain into a percentage modifier on a Mifflin-St Jeor baseline. It also applies a small recovery adjustment and offers five goal splits, including recomposition and endurance. Garmin: measured calories instead of a multiplier
Garmin Connect shows resting and active calories separately, so the Garmin calculator simply adds them. There is no activity drop-down at all. It adjusts for morning Body Battery, enforces a protein floor of 1.6 g/kg (1.4 g/kg for the performance goal) so low-calorie targets never under-serve protein, and includes a steps cross-check that flags a stale profile weight or a loosely worn watch. What both share
- Mifflin-St Jeor as the resting-energy fallback, the equation recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for healthy adults.
- Fat held at 25–30% of calories, protein set by goal, carbohydrate absorbing the remainder and moving with training.
- Small readiness adjustments by design. A red recovery or a low Body Battery nudges carbohydrate toward fat and fibre; it does not put you on a diet for the day.
- A two-week reality check. Wearable calorie estimates carry roughly 10–20% error, so both pages tell you to eat to the number for 14 days, compare weight trends, and adjust by 150–200 calories.
- Every step shown. Both results panels list BMR, activity, wearable modifier, goal offset and split, so you can see why the number is what it is.
