Garmin Body Battery vs WHOOP Recovery
Two numbers, two philosophies. Body Battery tracks how much energy you have left in the tank; WHOOP Recovery grades how your nervous system compares to your own baseline. Here is how to read each one for training and nutrition.
Two Different Questions
Garmin and WHOOP both promise to tell you how recovered you are, and both lean heavily on heart rate variability. But they answer different questions. Body Battery asks "how much energy do you have right now?" — a fuel gauge that moves all day. WHOOP Recovery asks "compared with your normal, how well did your body bounce back overnight?" — a single morning grade against your own baseline. Once you see that distinction, most of the confusion about why the two disagree disappears.
How Body Battery Works
Body Battery is a Firstbeat metric that runs on a 5–100 scale. It is essentially a running balance:
- Charging happens when Garmin's stress score is low — most powerfully during sleep, when heart rate variability rises and the parasympathetic ("rest and digest") branch of your nervous system dominates. A full, restful night commonly recharges 60–100 points.
- Draining happens with physical activity and with physiological stress. Firstbeat's stress score (0–100, where 0–25 is rest and 76–100 is high stress) is inferred from HRV patterns in your beat-to-beat heart rate, so a tense meeting, a double espresso, a hangover or a fever all register as drain even if you never leave your chair.
Because it is a balance, Body Battery is path-dependent. Two people can both wake at 85; one drains to 20 by evening after a hard ride, the other coasts to 60. Neither number tells you about their baseline. It also has no built-in normalisation: some users habitually wake at 100, others rarely break 70, and Garmin does not tell you which is "good for you."
How WHOOP Recovery Works
WHOOP Recovery is a 0–100% score computed once, when you wake. It looks at your overnight physiology — heart rate variability (measured as RMSSD during sleep), resting heart rate, respiratory rate and sleep performance, with skin temperature and blood oxygen feeding in on newer hardware — and compares each against a rolling personal baseline. HRV is the dominant input. The output is banded: green at 67% and above, yellow from 34–66%, red at 33% and below.
The crucial word is baseline. A 45 ms HRV might be a fantastic night for one person and a warning sign for another; WHOOP scores the deviation, not the absolute value. That is why Recovery is so good at catching the things that quietly degrade your physiology — alcohol, a late heavy meal, the first day of an infection, a bad week of sleep — and why it stays fixed all day rather than draining. What Each Is Good For
Body Battery excels at pacing your day
Because it moves in real time, Body Battery is the better tool for within-day decisions. Waking at 90 and seeing 35 by 3 p.m. tells you your morning meeting block drained more than your run did — useful when deciding whether to keep the evening session. It also makes the cost of stress visible in a way morning-only scores cannot: watching the line flatten after a large lunch, or plunge after coffee at 4 p.m., is a powerful behaviour-change tool.
WHOOP Recovery excels at deciding training intensity
Recovery is designed for one decision — how hard to go today — and it is calibrated to you. The baseline comparison means it flags a personally-bad night even when your absolute numbers look fine, and its band thresholds map cleanly onto training prescriptions: green for intensity, yellow for volume at moderate effort, red for mobility or rest. It is also the more sensitive of the two to alcohol and early illness because it weights HRV deviation so heavily.
Reading Them for Nutrition
Both metrics are downstream of the same physiology — autonomic balance — and that physiology is strongly affected by what and when you eat. In either system, the same four levers move the needle:
- Alcohol suppresses HRV and raises resting heart rate for most of the night. Expect a visibly lower morning Body Battery and a red or low-yellow Recovery after two or more drinks.
- Late, large meals keep heart rate elevated during early sleep while you digest. Finishing dinner three hours before bed is one of the most reliable ways to improve both scores.
- Dehydration and heat raise heart rate and lower HRV; a poorly hydrated evening shows up as a weak overnight recharge.
- Under-fueling during hard training blocks produces a slow slide: Body Battery stops reaching the 80s, HRV status trends "low," and Recovery lives in yellow. Adding 200–300 calories, mostly carbohydrate, often reverses it within a week.

Shift 5–10% of calories toward carbohydrate. Fuel intensity. Eat the larger pre-workout meal.
Moderate: BB 40–74 / Recovery 34–66%
Standard split. Protect protein, keep meals regular, prioritise hydration and an earlier dinner.
Recovery: BB <40 / Recovery ≤33%
Hold protein (1.6–2.0 g/kg), shift carbohydrate toward fat and fibre, skip alcohol entirely, aim for an early night.
Reading Them for Training
The workable rule for Garmin users: use morning Body Battery (or Training Readiness) to set the day's ceiling, then watch Body Battery through the day to decide whether the planned session still fits. If you woke at 85 but are at 30 by late afternoon, the evening interval session is unlikely to be productive — swap it for an easy aerobic effort or move it. WHOOP users get the ceiling from Recovery and the running cost from Strain; the two systems converge on the same advice by different routes.
